Revolutionize Your News and Sports Production

Newsroom_1

Efficiency and agility are paramount in the high-stakes world of news and sports production. Delays can mean missing critical moments, allowing competitors to capture the audience’s attention first. Vidispine's web render engine is here to change the game, enabling you to produce and broadcast content without the delays caused by rendering, mitigating the pain points of traditional rendering:

  • Delays in content delivery: Prolonged rendering can delay finalization, causing missed broadcasting opportunities.
  • Stalling collaboration: Teams are slowed down when waiting for rendering, affecting overall workflow.
  • Decreased flexibility: Lengthy rendering times limit last-minute changes and experimentation.
  • Resource drain: Rendering consumes valuable computing resources, impacting other production aspects.
  • Reduced efficiency: Prolonged rendering times can bog down teams, affecting the ability to cover multiple events simultaneously.

Discover Vidispine's Web Render Engine

Vidispine’s web render engine revolutionizes production by storing and managing content efficiently without creating new files for every sequence. Only metadata is generated when users edit a sequence, eliminating the need for file movement or rendering. The render engine is a collaborative video editing software that enables multiple editors to work simultaneously on the same content from anywhere.

Benefits

Accelerate production with real-time video editing and instant content delivery.
Enable simultaneous collaborative video editing from anywhere.
Quickly adapt to breaking news with on-the-fly edits and no rendering delays.
Deliver engaging stories with advanced editing capabilities and seamless workflows.
Optimize costs and resources by streamlining workflows and reducing reliance and expensive proprietary.
Easily integrate with popular non-linear editing systems like Adobe Premiere Pro.

How Does Renderless Video Rendering Work?

Because creating new sequences doesn’t involve file movement or rendering, the process is lightning-fast and immediately accessible to all system users, including producers and journalists who may not use an editing application. Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening behind the scenes of our render engine.

  • Rather than creating new rendered files for each sequence edit, edits happen directly in the cloud. The system manages video projects as structured data, meaning each edit or adjustment is immediately available to all collaborators – producers, journalists, and editors alike – without needing specialized video editing collaboration software. This structure allows seamless collaboration on a live timeline, or “sequence,” without requiring file exports or intermediate steps.

  • During review and approval, the system uses proxy files – lower-resolution versions of the original media optimized for streaming. Each video sequence has two representations: the original, high-quality, lightweight proxy format. This data structure, or “data object,” includes all necessary metadata, effects, transitions, and references, enabling real-time previewing. By handling media references instead of actual media, the system can stream the sequence without delay, making the review process fast and intuitive.

  • Instead of creating a new file each time an edit is made, the user hands over the sequence data (timeline document) to a video server. The server interprets the timeline structure, including clip references, transitions, and other embedded metadata, allowing it to play the sequence immediately without rendering. An innovative data architecture and the video server’s ability to read and interpret the sequence data in real time enable this instant playback capability.

Support For All Types of Broadcast Production in News and Sports

Renderless technology is ideal in the workflows for news and sports broadcasting, where speed and real-time updates are essential but applied differently based on the production needs of each. Here’s how it works and benefits different broadcast scenarios:

Breaking news

For breaking news, every second counts. Renderless technology enables nearly instant sequence updates and previews, making it possible to get news segments on-air as quickly as possible. Editors can rapidly incorporate new footage, graphics, or updates without rendering delay, ensuring swift time-to-air in high-pressure situations.

Sports events

Whether it's covering a complete match or creating highlight reels, renderless technology supports rapid turnaround for sports coverage. Editors can pull together key plays, summaries, and post-game interviews in real-time, delivering compelling content for viewers without delay. This enables flexible, fast-paced, real-time video editing, ideal for highlight packages or quick analysis segments during live sports coverage.

How to Get Started with Renderless Broadcasting

Book a Demo: Book renderless broadcasting by scheduling a personalized demo. This hands-on experience will give you a real-world look at how the system works, tailored to your specific workflow needs and challenges.

Discuss Your Workflow Needs: Every production has unique requirements, and understanding your goals and challenges is crucial to implementing renderless technology effectively. Consider:

  • What is your current production process?
  • Where do you need the most support?
  • What specific challenges are you hoping to solve?

Proof of Concept (PoC): Vidispine can set up a PoC system to test the technology within your environment. Using a hybrid architecture, the system can be set up in the cloud within hours, allowing you to experience its impact on your workflow without extensive configuration.

Integrate with On-Premise Systems: We finish the implementation if you are satisfied with the result. Since many operate on-premise video services, we can integrate a video server within your facility, ensuring that you maintain control while gaining the efficiency and flexibility of cloud-based, renderless technology.

Partnership with Qvest for Seamless Playout

Integrating Qvest Stream's Clipbox and the VidiNet portfolio aims to optimize newsroom production processes.

The latest version of Clipbox, the studio server for ingest and playout, has been used for the integration. The enhancement improves studio ingest and playout, making Clipbox the first studio server to fully support Vidispine's new renderless workflow based on the Web Render Engine (WRE). This leads to more efficient collaboration and reduces production delays in newsrooms.

The new version of Clipbox offers users advanced customization options for their ingest and playout workflows, especially in newsrooms where every second often counts. It also enables real-time rendering with transition effects, allowing users to play out content directly without an additional vision mixer.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions on Renderless

  • Renderless refers to a video editing process that does not require traditional rendering. This means no new files are created after each edit. Instead, edits are stored as metadata, enabling instant playback and reducing delays in the production workflow.

  • A renderless editing process saves the time typically required for rendering after each edit, which can vary greatly depending on factors like video length, resolution, and complexity of effects. By bypassing these rendering steps, production times can be shortened significantly, especially in fast-paced environments like news and sports, where rapid turnaround is critical.

  • Live video editing allows editors to make and view changes in real-time, enabling faster content updates, instant feedback, and more dynamic storytelling. This is particularly useful for breaking news and live sports, where immediate adjustments are often required.

  • A collaborative video editor online is a platform that allows multiple users to work on the same video project simultaneously from different locations. With Vidispine's web render engine, editors, producers, and other stakeholders can edit, review, and approve content in real-time, facilitating seamless teamwork.

  • Video editing collaboration tools enhance workflow efficiency by allowing real-time feedback, reducing bottlenecks, and streamlining the review and approval process. These tools improve communication among team members, save time, and ultimately speed up content delivery.
